Apple unveiled the iPhone 5 on Wednesday, and also revealed lower pricing on previous models. The iPhone 4S dropped to $99 with a two-year contract. The iPhone 4 is now free with a contract. So where does that leave the iPhone 3GS?

Well, it leaves it in the past. Apple was expected to discontinue the device, but AllThingsD is reporting that Apple has now confirmed this to be the case.

The 3GS launched in 2009, and has been the free option since the launch of the 4S. That alone has continued to make it an attractive offer for those who want iPhones, but who don’t want to fork out the money for the newer models. The honor of filling that void goes to the 4S now.

If you already have a 3GS, and weren’t planning on upgrading, don’t fret, because iOS 6, Apple’s new operating system version, is still coming to the device, though the phone does not have the capabilities to utilize all of the features (of which there are over 200 new ones).

The iPhone 5 releases on September 21 here in the U.S. and a handful of other countries, before rolling out to more countries a week later.
