Yahoo, apparently trying to see how many it can squeeze in before the end of the year, has acquired yet another company (sort of).
The company this time is QuikIO, not to be confused with Qwiki, which Yahoo acquired back in the summer. We say “sort of” because apparently Yahoo just snagged three people from the company, and the actual product is shutting down.
QuikIO was designed to be “your media center for iPhone and iPad”.
A note appearing on the Quik.io site says:
Dear QuikIO users,
Thank you very much for being a QuikIO user. We want to let you know that we’ll be shutting down QuikIO service at the end of the year.
You’ll be able to use QuikIO service through December 31, 2013. After that, we will stop offering app download and support. Your QuikIO app will continue to operate only with the LAN discovery mode. You can find the instructions on the steps to set up LAN discovery mode from the link below:

Notice that it doesn’t mention an acquisition or even the name Yahoo at all.
Hamish McKenzie asked QuickIO founder Michael Chen about the situation in an email, and was directed to Yahoo PR, which confirmed that “three employees from QuikIO have joined Yahoo’s video team in Sunnyvale,” but wouldn’t comment further.
Chen, QuikIO co-founder and VP of engineering Xumin Wu, and a third person have reportedly joined Yahoo.
Last week, Yahoo acquired Ptch, making at least the 24th acquisition for Yahoo in 2013. QuikIO would make 25, and rumor has it that Yahoo is trying to buy Imgur, but the status of those talks is unclear.
