Someone has been impersonating Brett Favre on Twitter. It’s not uncommon for people to impersonate celebrities on Twitter, but this particular count was verified, which is supposed to be Twitter’s seal of approval, and instill confidence that tweets are from a legitimate account.

The account shows the first tweet being on March 5 – five days ago – with this:

It looks like everything on the account is from the impostor, however. International Business Times reports on a statement from Favre’s people, who say Favre set up the account on March 2. The above tweet is from March 5. IBTimes reports:

The statement says that the last real tweet from Favre was a shoutout to Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson when he told his followers, “Follow the future NFL QB Russell Wilson @DangeRussWilson” #B1G.”

That tweet does’t appear to be on the account’s timeline any longer, which leads me to believe it was deleted, and that the remaining tweets are from the fake Favre, who actually came clean in recent tweets:

The account no longer comes with the verified symbol. The account has about 1,800 followers. The parody account has 64.

It’s unclear whether the real Favre will return to the original account, or at all.

It seems a little odd that Twitter would allow someone that hijacked someone’s account to go on with another one.
