Got any good photo memorabilia of Queen Elizabeth II? If so, a new partnership between Google Maps and Historypin may have you digging out those old collectibles as it offers admirers of Her Majesty an opportunity to share their photos and videos, along with the memories attached therein, on an interactive Google Map.
Commemorating the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, the year-long celebration of the Queen’s 60-year reign, Google announced that it’s teamed with Historypin to create a an interactive online gallery where visitors can submit their personal photos and videos of the Queen. Pinning the Queen’s History, as the project has been named, aims to collect images from around the world and integrate them into Google Street View. The images will be overlaid onto the Google Street View vantage so users will be able to see the street as a then-and-now retrospective, as seen below.
Essentially, the goal is to superimpose a collection of moments from the Queen’s tenure on the throne onto the exact location they were captured.
The collection has been boosted by the provision of images from The Queen’s overseas visits taken by press photographers, and by photographs of items from the Buckingham Palace’s Royal Archives. Items from the Royal Archives include the sitar presented to The Queen during her visit to India in 1997, an earthenware vase presented to the Queen by the Prime Minister of Japan and a map showing the air routes around South Australia during the 1954 Commonwealth Tour.
Users are invited to visit Pinning the Queen’s History to submit their personal photos to the map. So far, a total of 817 pictures, videos, audio clips, and stories have been added to the interactive gallery. Given that the Queen has made more overseas trips than any other Sovereign in history, expect to see additions coming in from all corners of the globe.
