Bethesda has handled the launch and post-launch upkeep of Skyrim way better than any of their previous games. By all accounts, it’s a pretty stable game without much wrong with it. There are still a few minor issues that Bethesda has historically never fixed, and now the first unofficial patch is out to fix it.
Coming from the official Elder Scrolls forums, which is a great place to get mod information, comes the news that version 1.0 of the Unofficial Skyrim Patch is now live. The patch attempts to fix many problems still present in the game. The fixes pertain to game mechanics, quest fixes, NPC/creature fixes, NIF mesh and texture fixes, item fixes, placement and world object fixes, and text fixes.
The list of changes made to the game is massive. I would list all of the changes, but it would make this article much too long. Let’s just say that this patch will make Skyrim run much smoother while eliminating redundancies in the game’s code.
Unfortunately for console gamers, the unofficial patch is only available for the PC version of Skyrim. If you own the console version, your best bet is that Bethesda implements these fixes in a later update.
You can check out the full change list on the Elder Scrolls forums. Just know that it’s worth your time to download it if you own the PC version of Skyrim. If the patch causes more bugs to appear, you can report said bugs to the team behind the patch.
It’s important to note that this is a beta release of the patch. It probably will work fine for you with little to no effect on your game. It may, however, conflict with a mod or a custom configuration that will cause your game to lock up or not work properly. Always back up your saves and be ready to catalog some bugs just in case.
If you are ready to enter a world where Skyrim doesn’t break as much, you can download the patch here. Tell us how it is once you’ve had a chance to play around with it.
