The 21 Jump Street remake is the new box office champ! The movie has dethroned the CGI message movie Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax. Movies based on popular shows form Americas past have been popping up with more frequency leading many to believe that hollywood has run out of ideas. Most of these “relaunches” are very unsuccessful. Charlie’s Angels, The Beverly Hillbillies, and the Dukes of Hazzard are movies that have failed.
There have been a few successful remakes. The Mission Impossible remake by Tom Cruise has spawned 4 movies, and the Adams Family has 3 movies. Well, you can now add 21 Jump Street to this list. Currently puling an 85% critics review and a 92% audience review on rottentomatoes.com, it is one of the few movies so far that both parties enjoyed.
“21 Jump Street” earned $35 million coming in at first. Last weeks 2 time defending champ “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax” came in second with $22.8 million. Rounding out the top 5 are “John Carter at #3 with $13.5 million, “Project X” at #4 with $4 million, and the Eddie Murphy bomb “A Thousand Words” at #5 with $3.75 million.
