David Garrard, former quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars, inked a deal with Miami yesterday that could put him in a good position for a starting job when the season opens.
The 34-year old was out last season after the Jaguars released him just five days before the opener. Despite garnering interest from Miami back then, he chose instead to undergo back surgery and actually considered retiring. But the call of the game was too strong, and after a full recovery, he went on to impress the Dolphins enough to land a deal with them. Garrard says he doesn’t want to have any regrets.
“It was taken away from me, and it gave me a great perspective on life and this game,” he said. “I want to make sure when I leave this game, I do it when I’m ready to go, and there’s never any remorse or thought of, could I have done more?”
This latest acquisition by Miami comes after failed attempts to land Matt Flynn and Peyton Manning; Flynn just signed with Seattle and news broke yesterday that Manning will be going to Denver when the season starts. Now, after a promising interview with 49ers free agent Alex Smith, it looks like he and Garrard will most likely be the players vying for the honor of starting the season with the Dolphins.
“They didn’t say for sure they were bringing another guy in, but they said it’s a possibility, whether in the draft or whatever,” Garrard said.
The team, according to ESPN, seems to be flailing wildly with their choices and appear to be lost. Twitter users had mixed reactions, but most appear to agree with ESPN.
The Dolphins wanted Peyton Manning and got David Garrard. That’s like ordering a filet mignon and getting McDonald’s.
#NFL David Garrard is a Dolphin. P.S. Auto-correct wanted to write Garbage not Garrard.
