Pat Robertson has said some crazy things in his day. So it’s keeping with tradition that the 700 Club host should say even more crazy things, maybe even take those crazy things into the world of sports talk. He could, for example, suggest that it would serve the Broncos right if Peyton Manning, who recently replaced über-Christian Tim Tebow as Denver’s starting quarterback, got injured this coming season. Oh wait, that actually happened.
Robertson has a history of ascribing unfortunate events to manifestations of God’s wrath, like the time he suggested the 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti was punishment for a 19th-century Haitian pact with the devil. While he didn’t explicitly state that Manning would be injured at the hand of God, a lot of viewers think Robertson implied that there will be theological implications to the Tebow trade, given the televangelist’s record of speaking for the Almighty, and his outspoken support of Tebow as a Christian figure. Robertson’s right: Public Relations doesn’t bear him out. For proof of this, look no further than Twitter, where the general reaction to Robertson’s comments goes something like this: “OMG, WTF?! #STFU.” (Most comments were a bit more articulate than that, but you get the idea.) In fairness to Robertson, the cabbie that drove me to work yesterday expressed a similar sentiment about Manning, although his had nothing to do with God. He just thought Manning is reckless and arrogant to keep playing with neck injuries. Then again, this guy also said that if he were Tebow, he’d quit the league after being dissed by the Broncos. Yeah, right. I’d quit, too, if my only other option were a $2.5 million salary advance and a multi-year, multi-million dollar player’s contract. But if I were Tim Tebow, I’d probably think about calling up Pat Robertson and asking him never to mention me on his show again.
