Instagram continues its long, buttery foreplay with Android users who have been patiently waiting for the app. A couple of weeks ago, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom announced at SXSW that Android would be arriving for the Android platform “very soon” and hinted that the Android version will improve upon the iOS version. However, “very soon” isn’t actually a date you can find on the calendar so nobody really knows when the app will arrive.

In lieu of Instagram’s actual arrival, the latest tickle arrived today: Instagram has created a site where Android users can register to be “first in line” to get the app when it becomes available. You basically go to the site, enter your email, and then… that’s it. No information offered (like a prospective launch date), no screenshots to tease people, just a “Thanks for signing up! We’ll be in touch soon!” in front of a color scheme that looks like a banana-lime Fruit Roll-up blur.

Tim Van Damme, designer and self-described “pixelfucker” at Instagram, spent a moment of his weekend teasing fans via his Twitter account.

Instagram! Android! Coming soon! http://t.co/LEcmAqQv (Dribbble) 1 day ago via Twitter for Mac ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

That link doesn’t really go anywhere anymore, but this subsequent exchange provided a working link that produced the following screenshot:

Despite dropping that image, Van Damme wasn’t forthcoming with anymore details:

@maxvoltar any chance of a bigger version of this? http://t.co/MaXEjxYP 1 day ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

@Zee attached it to the Dribbble shot. 1 day ago via Tweetbot for iOS ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

@maxvoltar oh but that only has the Android logo, no UI of the app itself. Intentional? 1 day ago via Twitter for Mac ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

@Zee yes 🙂 1 day ago via Tweetbot for iOS ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

@maxvoltar *waves fist* 🙂 1 day ago via Twitter for Mac ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

It’s difficult if not outright daft to speculate on when Instagram will finally drop for Android. The app’s reportedly been in private beta testing but that’s not really an indicator of when to expect the app being offered to the public; it just tells us that it’s out there somewhere. In the meantime, Android users, just recall that not-very-fun “delay of gratification” that Freud supposed would enhance the enjoyment of the eventual prize. Maybe the wait will all be worth it.
