January Jones does a wonderful job at making us believe she would never do anything controversial when she inhabits the role of uptight, beautiful blonde Betty Draper on AMC’s “Mad Men“. However, the same can’t be said for her in real life.
The new mom, who wasn’t in last night’s premiere episode because the birth of her son coincided with filming, says she eats her own placenta to combat fatigue and post-partum depression and “suggests it to all moms”
Now, before you get all squirmy or throw up in your mouth envisioning her cutting off pieces of placenta steak, it should be said that the placenta itself was dehydrated after the birth of her son and put into capsule form. So basically, all she has to do is pop a pill.
Still, the idea of ingesting one’s own placenta isn’t an idea that many people are comfortable with–or will be. But Jones–who says she was wary of trying it at first–now insists it’s just a natural part of the birthing process.
“It’s something I was very hesitant about, but we’re the only mammals who don’t ingest our own placentas,” she told People Magazine.
While it might sound strange to some, this is not a new practice and there are several websites that offer placenta recipes (Warning: if you have a weak stomach, don’t click on the above link). Funny to imagine her in full Betty Draper dress, apron and all, eating placenta.
