As you make your second, third, and maybe even fourth trip to your local theaters to re-live The Avengers magic once again, you can now relax in knowing that there will, in fact, be a sequel.
Yeah, I know. This shouldn’t surprise anyone who saw the film. It also shouldn’t surprise anyone who saw the incredible weekend box office numbers. So without expecting to elicit any shock, only excitement, I can tell you that Disney CEO Bob Iger has announced that The Avengers 2 is already in development.
In its first U.S. weekend, The Avengers raked in $200.3 million. That was enough to best the previous record holder (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows pt. 2, $169 million) to become the biggest box office (Hulk) smash of all time.
When you factor in the $441 million that the film made internationally both prior and during this U.S. weekend release, it totals over $641 million for Disney. That figure is obviously even higher by now, and the revenue is expected to break the $1 billion mark by the end of this upcoming weekend.

Marvel’s The Avengers had theDeadline quotes Iger in saying that The Avengers and its success is a “great illustration of why we like Marvel so much.” Yeah, you think?
