If you think deep sea drilling is a dangerous job, you are right. There are countless hazards to someone’s health, but cameras on one rig off the shores of the United Kingdom captured something that is sure to strike fear into the heart’s of workers.
A gigantic sea monster, seldom ever seen, and almost never seen alive made an appearance around the rig and stayed for a brief investigation. Once you see the video you’ll understand why workers on the platform were quite confused about exactly the creature was, if indeed a creature at all.
CBS Tampa reported on the story and followed up with scientist Steven Haddock of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in Moss Landing, California. He explained that the beast is a Deepstaria enigmatic jellyfish.
This particular creature is typically found in the Atlantic Ocean and lives at depths of 5000 feet below the surface. It could be the drilling rig disturbed its daily activities in some way and it came a little closer to investigate the intrusion.
Remember, we are guests of the ocean and actually know less about what lives in the great depths than we know about many parts of outer space, so if many of these creatures seem alien to you, it is because many never see the light of day. I have taken the liberty to track down some other jellyfish specimens and various sea monsters you may also enjoy viewing.
