Earlier this year, Google invited anybody handy with Google SketchUp to make a full 3D model of their community to enter in the 2012 Model Town Competition. All entrants will get their 3D model added to Google Earth’s 3D Buildings layer but the winner will also receive $25,000 to go towards a local school in the winning team’s community.
Google narrowed down the pool of entries to six finalists and then invited the public to vote for their favorite model. Today, Google has announced that the people have spoken and the name of the community they spoke is: Getaria, Gipuzkoa, Spain. Google put together a video that highlights some of the amazing work stitched together by the winning team of Josetxo Perez Fernandez and Pedro Domecq Aguirre.
Part of the goal of the competition was for designers to include some of the unique architecture that marks their community as a special patch of Earth. As you saw above in the video of Getaria, which is about 30 kilometers from San Sebastian the team included landmarks such as the monument to the explorer Juan Sebastian Elcano and the lighthouse located atop Mount San Aton.
