It was so sad to see BioShock Infinite delayed to February of next year. I was scared that Irrational’s high-flying game would be all alone in the winter month with nobody to comfort it. It’s good news then that the cold, acidic embrace of a Xenomorph is now there to keep it company.
That’s right folks, Sega and Gearbox’s Aliens: Colonial Marines has been delayed until February 2013. The delay impacts all versions of the game, but the new release window only applies to the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC versions of the game. The planned Wii U version will launch at some point after that apparently.
Colonial Marines was announced years ago, but only started to show up in the news lately as Gearbox started to show off the game in earnest last year. At that point, the game was given a fall 2012 release date, but that obviously isn’t going to happen. Gearbox could have potentially pushed back the date since they have another hotly anticipated game, Borderlands 2, coming out this fall as well.
“I am thrilled to announce the definitive launch date for Aliens: Colonial Marines,” said Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox Software. “Aliens: Colonial Marines is the culmination of a life-time of inspiration from the films and relentless passion and drive from the exceptionally talented development team behind the scenes.”
For those who have not been following the game, Aliens: Colonial Marines intends to be the true sequel to James Cameron’s masterpiece Aliens. The story picks up right after the events of that film with a group of marines discovering an abandoned ship orbiting around LV-426, the planet from the first two films.
The game seems to be aiming for the action that was present in Aliens with the anxiety and the fear that the original Alien instilled. As a huge Alien fan, I am predisposed to love the game, but here’s hoping that the extra development time makes it good enough so that everybody can enjoy it.
To celebrate the new release date, Gearbox has released a new trailer for the game. It’s 100 percent gameplay and it looks amazing.
