Green Lantern gay? Apparently that’s the case, according to the Associated Press. When the second issue of “Earth 2” hits newsstands and comic book shops next week, readers will be treated a completely revamped version of DC’s long-standing superhero. However, those fans who are a more than a little concerned that Hal Jordan is now homosexual should note that the rebirth of Green Lantern involves Alan Scott, who is based off of the character who appeared in “All-American Comics” back in the 1940’s.
“He doesn’t come out. He’s gay when we see him in issue two. He’s fearless and he’s honest to the point where he realized he was gay and he said ‘I’m gay’,” explained series writer James Robinson. “It was just meant to be — Alan Scott being a gay member of the team, the Justice Society, that I’ll be forming in the pages of ‘Earth 2.’ He’s just meant to be part of this big tapestry of characters.”
Green Lantern isn’t alone in his sexuality. DC comics revealed not too long ago that Kate Kane, the current incarnation of Batwoman, is a lesbian. Additionally, Marvel also stated that their character Northstar will wed his boyfriend in “Astonishing X-Men”. Over at Riverdale High School, the setting for the seemingly endless “Archie Comics” series, Kevin Keller is gay and proud.
