Omar Comin’ to Broadway: The Wire as a Musical

Forget Game of Thrones. Forget this magnificent season of Mad Men. The pinnacle of modern TV series storytelling has to be HBO’s much-loved show The Wire. And I’m not just saying that as a middle-class white guy who’s never been to Baltimore (the show’s stereotypical fanbase). The Wire was a brilliant show and anyone who has yet to watch it is doing themselves a tremendous disservice.

That’s why I’m so happy that they’ve decided to turn the gritty crime drama into a musical. Okay, not really. But this amazing video from Funny or Die imagines what it might look like if they did.

You have some actual actors from the series participating in the musical, as well as some interesting choices for some characters whose original actors weren’t available. For instance, Stringer Bell probably doesn’t look like the Stringer Bell you remember.

Check it out below:

The video jokes that the reviews are in from the New York Times:

“I’m pretty sure David Simon doesn’t know they’re doing this. But if he did he’d love it!”

Apparently, they were right about the show’s creator. Earlier today on his personal blog, Simon called the video “hilarious.”

“Felicia’s (Snoop) turn alone is worth the time. Ya hair look good, Snoop. Someone hand me a burner and Sondheim’s number,” he wrote.

Maybe it’s not such a far-out idea after all.
