Screen Gems has given us the first full trailer for the Paul W.S. Anderson horror/action/zombie film Resident Evil: Retribution.

Like its predecessors, the film stars Milla Jovavich. But a cool addition is the return of Shawn Roberts as Albert Wesker, who the characters all thought died in Resident Evil: Afterlife.

It seems that just like the video game series, the film series exists in a Resident Evil universe as opposed to following a single storyline. Characters come and go in the series, while some leave and then reappear. Michelle Rodriguez will return as Rain Ocampo. She hasn’t been seen since the first installment. Sienna Guillory joins the cast as Jill Valentine, but it looks like Chris Redfield will not be appearing in this picture.

It is the third film in the series to be written directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. The first one being the original; the second, Resident Evil: Afterlife. He also provided the screenplay for Apocalypse and Extinction, so it’s safe to say by now that this is his series.

Resident Evil’s production company Screen Gems supplies us with a plot synopsis:

In a world ravaged by a virus infection, turning its victims into the Undead, Alice (Jovovich), continues on her journey to find survivors and lead them to safety. Her deadly battle with the Umbrella Corporation reaches new heights, but Alice gets some unexpected help from an old friend. A new lead that promises a safe haven from the Undead takes them to Los Angeles, but when they arrive the city is overrun by thousands of Undead – and Alice and her comrades are about to step into a deadly trap.

Resident Evil: Retribution is scheduled for release on September 14th.
