Generally, tie-in video games based on movies are never very good, and usually feature slapped-together gameplay created on a budget to capitalize on the movie’s brand. However, when the video game is based on a movie that is based on video games, then you have to wonder whether the tie-in game could be fun.
Disney Interactive and Activision announced today that they will collaborate on a Wreck-It Ralph video game. The game will be a “story extension” of the movie, which features a video game bad guy who leaves his game to become a video game hero. It will pick up where the movie leaves off, with Ralph partnering with Fix-It Felix to save various video game worlds from a Cy-Bug invasion. The video game will be in the style of classic arcade side-scrollers. It will be released this fall along with the Wreck-It Ralph movie, and will be released for the Nintendo Wii, DS, 3DS, and, presumably, the 3DS XL, which will be released in August.
“Wreck-It Ralph, as a brand, is perfectly suited for video game stardom,” said David Oxford, executive vice president of Activision Publishing. “With the fantastic characters and creative atmosphere envisioned by Walt Disney Animation Studios, we know fans are going to love seeing their newfound favorite characters embark on an all-new side scrolling adventure.”
The just-announced video game is different from the flash version of Fix-It Felix that Disney released in conjunction with the trailer for the movie. The fact that the new video game will be exclusive to Nintendo systems, which are more prone to poor 3rd party titles, is worrying. Also, a side-scrolling arcade game is almost the definition of slapped-together movie tie-in. The only hope is that the game developers were inspired by the obvious creativity of the Wreck-It Ralph movie.
