Michael Fassbender appears to have won over even the most hard-to-please crowd: the gamers. With charming, often thought-provoking roles in the highly successful “Inglorious Basterds” and, most recently, “Prometheus”, Fassbender has proven himself a man worthy of the enormous task ahead of him: filling the shoes of a video game icon.
It was just announced that he’ll play the main character in a film based on the hugely successful game “Assassin’s Creed”, and that he’ll also co-produce it. Ubisoft, which created the game, says they never thought twice about who would step into the starring role.
A commenter on The Verge put it best: “Bad news: video game movie. Good news: it’s Assassin’s Creed. F’n epic news: FASSBENDER!”
“Michael Fassbender was our first choice,” said Ubisoft’s Jean-Julien Baronnet. “He is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor.”
I don’t usually hold out much hope for films based on video games; while a few of them go on to do well, it seems the market has been inundated with a flood of crap, from the script to the acting. The truth is, it’s just difficult to translate a popular game onto the big screen. Sometimes, even with the right actors, it falls apart. Except for Super Mario Bros. Bob Hoskins was the bomb in that.
However, I will say that I’ve held Fassbender in extremely high regard since I first saw him in “Inglorious Basterds” and, even though I’m not terribly familiar with the game, I don’t really imagine him screwing it up. There haven’t been a whole lot of details just yet, but until I see otherwise, I’m going to assume this project will be an epic win.
