The entertainment community mourns this week at the loss of Lupe Ontiveros, an Emmy Award-winning actress, well-known for her role as Juanita “Mama” Solis in the comedy/drama/mystery television series of Desperate Housewives.
Lupe Ontiveros (born as Guadalupe Moreno) was born in El Paso, Texas, but later moved to California after she married her husband Elías. Ontiveros kicked off her acting career by starring in small movies, such as El Norte (1983), and also received a small roll as the Latina housekeeper in the 1985 Columbus/Spielberg film The Goonies. Ontiveros continued to star in small films throughout the 80s and 90s.
Recently, Ontiveros starred alongside Ugly Betty star America Ferrera in the 2002 film Real Women Have Curves, and in 2004, received her roll in Desperate Housewives.
This past week, on July 26th, 2012, Lupe Ontiveros died at the age of 69 due to liver cancer. Many fans of Ontiveros left their condolences via Twitter.
I am tremendously saddened by the news of Lupe’s passing. http://t.co/UxVoGwhD She will truly be missed.
RIP character actress Lupe Ontiveros. She pretty much played every Latina character in every movie ever.
So sad to hear about passing of Lupe Ontiveros. She was a bawdy lady wrapped in a class act. Talented, funny & under-appreciated. A gem.
Rest in Peace Lupe Ontiveros. A great actress and a true pioneer!
Sad to hear about Lupe Ontiveros. She lit up the screen in everything she did. Real Women Have Curves is on the top of my list.
