Silversun Pickups Tell Romney To Back Up

The Silversun Pickups were rightly surprised to find out their song “Panic Switch” has been used by Mitt Romney on his campaign trail, and immediately sent him a cease-and-desist letter about it. They also released a statement, which pretty much sums up the way any musician would feel after learning their songs were being used for political purposes.

“We’re nice, approachable people. We won’t bite. Unless you’re Mitt Romney! We were very close to just letting this go because the irony was too good. While he is inadvertently playing a song that describes his whole campaign, we doubt that ‘Panic Switch’ really sends the message he intends.”

This isn’t the first time Romney’s gotten in trouble with a musician; back in February, rapper K’Naan expressed his unhappiness that the politician was using his song “Wavin’ Flag”, and ordered him to stop using it. However, in a bit of salt-rubbing, he announced that Obama was free to use it with his consent.

But Romney isn’t the first to use an unauthorized song on the campaign trail. Here’s a breakdown of several songs and the politicians who tried to use them to their advantage and were ultimately smacked down.

“Eye Of The Tiger”–Newt Gingrich

“There Goes My Hero”–John McCain (He also got into trouble with ABBA, John Mellencamp, and John Hall)

“I Won’t Back Down”–George W. Bush

“Born In The U.S.A.”–Ronald Reagan, every politician ever

“True Colors”–Democratic National Committee

“Barracuda”–Sarah Palin

“Panic Switch”
