Gearbox is absolutely insane. Borderlands 2 hasn’t even been out for a month yet, and they’re already adding tons of content to the game. The first DLC pack, Gaige the Mechromancer, was supposed to come out next week, but the pack came out to everybody’s surprise earlier this week. Now Gearbox is filling the void left by Gaige’s early release with the first of four planned DLC expansions.

Gearbox announced this morning that Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate’s Booty will be releasing on all platforms next week. It’s hard to imagine pirates fitting into the world of Pandora, but stranger things have happened. For their part, Gearbox thinks Captain Scarlett will fit right in as she inhabits an old ocean reasort town called Oasis that’s been overtaken by desert. Some players might be a bit turned off considering that Borderlands 2 was much more varied compared to the first game’s predominantly desert environment.

Deserts aren’t always a bad thing, however, and Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford makes the case for the DLC in a talk with the AP. He says that the DLC pack is more like Star War’s Tatooine, but with pirates instead of Jawas and Tusken Raiders. It also features a new sand skiff vehicle that’s obviously inspired by Star Wars as well.

Gamers will most assuredly have high expectations for this first DLC release. The DLC expansions for the first Borderlands were on par or better than the main game, especially the last two. Here’s hoping Gearbox can continue their tradition of excellence.

You’ll be able to grab the new DLC next week on October 16 for $10. It will be automatically delivered to you if you paid $30 for the season pass that entitles you to all four DLC expansions as they become available. Considering how fast this first pack came out, you probably won’t have to wait long for the next one.
