On the same day that reports surfaced claiming that Twitter was working on native photo filtering for their mobile apps, Facebook went ahead and launched native photo filtering for their iOS app.
Yesterday, the New York Times reported that anonymous sources insides the company told them that Twitter is currently working on adding photo filters to their mobile apps. Of course, this move would be a direct jab at a product like Instagram, which currently dominates the filtered-photo market. As of now, there are plenty of filtered photos being sent out as tweets, but they are cross-posts from Instagram (and other apps, to a lesser degree). Twitter, who is all about a unified user experience and has been strict with third party apps, would be cutting out the middleman by allowing users to filtering the photos they upload to Twitter’s own photo hosting service.
Facebook instantly beat Twitter to the punch, adding filtering options as a part of their 5.1 update to Facebook for iOS.
That update also included multiple photo upload support, Facebook Gifts integration, and a whole bunch of chat-related updates. It was the first major update to the overhauled Facebook app, which was unveiled back in August.
Now, when you are uploading a photo to Facebook, you have the opportunity to add 14 different filters: Contrast, Cool, Light, Emerald, Bright, Golden, Copper, Rouge, Cream, Coffee, Highlight, Boost, Neon, and Black & White.
Of course, Facebook made the big purchase of Instagram earlier this year and made photo filters available on the standalone Facebook Camera app – but this is the first time filters have appeared on the main Facebook app for iOS.
