A blonde ale, really. But the news is nevertheless exciting: you’re going to be able to enjoy a beer specifically designed for the hit HBO series on the night it returns to primetime. Awesome.
That beer will be called Iron Throne Blonde Ale, and it’s a collaboration between Ommegang Brewery (Cooperstown, NY) and HBO.
And Iron Throne isn’t the only Game of Thrones beer being brewed at Ommegang. It’s the first in a series of beers that will be produced and distributed as part of the collaboration. The Iron Throne beer will be the only one available by March 31st, the season three premiere date, however.
“Brewery Ommegang and HBO are partnering on a series of beers in support of the critically-acclaimed drama Game of Thrones. Launching in tandem with the season three debut, Iron Throne Blonde Ale is the inaugural beer in the series. The result of a creative collaboration between Brewmaster Phil Leinhart and HBO, the new Iron Throne Blonde Ale will launch nationwide timed to the show’s third season debut this spring on March 31,” said Ommegang.
“The collaboration between Ommegang and HBO is focused on developing unique beers that directly tie into themes, characters and nuances of the medieval-like fantasy realm of Westeros and the surrounding kingdoms, where the competition to sit on the Iron Throne is fierce and deadly.”
Beer and GoT enthusiasts can expect to see Iron Throne on draft at their local tap rooms and in bottles at their local liquor stores by mid-to-late March. The bottles will be 750ml (a little bigger than your average U.S. bomber) and will run you $8.50.
