Comedy sequels are rarely ever good. For every Clerks II, there’s 10 more Evan Almightys. That’s why it was a little concerning to see Anchorman was getting a sequel, but our fears may have been overblown.
On Tuesday, Paramount released the first official trailer for Anchorman 2. Gut reaction – it’s looking good. It’s hard to say whether or not it will be better than the first, but the trailer was able to elicit some genuine laughs. That’s better than nothing, right?
The only worrisome aspect of the trailer is that it doesn’t seem to address the finality that was present in the first film. The first Anchorman was a standalone film that even went so far as to tell viewers at the end where all the characters ended up. Rewriting that history for the sake of a sequel may not sit well with some fans, but the writers may be able to work their way around it.
Anchorman 2 will be out in theaters this Christmas.
