One of the first games announced for the PS4 was the PC free-to-play shooter Blacklight: Retribution. The multiplayer-only team-based shooter will be a launch title for Sony’s new console and it will be one of the first free-to-play titles to grace Sony’s system.
The developers at Zombie Studios spoke to Sony recently on their experiences in developing for the PS4 and the free-to-play model on consoles. It’s an interesting watch:
It’s going to be interesting to see how well the free-to-play model works, especially with shooters, on the PS4. There are already a few free-to-play titles available on the PS3, like Dust 514, but the PS4 will be pushing it right from launch. Will PS4 buyers pick up any games at retail when they can just play games like Blacklight: Retribution for free? They will if developers present ultra compelling titles that players can’t get from free-to-play titles.
