In a tragic turn of events, a small Alaskan plane crashed at an airport in Soldotna just one day after the San Francisco crash, killing the pilot and all nine passengers on board.
Soldotna is about 75 miles southwest of Anchorage; officials say they saw smoke from the burning wreckage before they could even get to the airport. The plane was found just off the runway, and an investigation is underway to determine what caused the crash. Weather doesn’t appear to have been a factor.
Many travelers in Alaska use small planes to get around due to sometimes-impassable roadways, and residents have already seen several crashes this year, including one on Saturday that left two men swimming for their lives in the waters near Kodiak.
Investigators say that all the victims have been transported to Anchorage, where autopsies are underway. No names have been released just yet.
