Painter Rembrandt van Rijn is the subject of today’s worldwide Google doodle, as today marks what would have been his 407th birthday.

Rembrandt was born on this day in 1606, and died on October 4th 1669. He is generally considered one of the greatest painters of all time, as his name is often used as a contrast to inferior work. For example, “Well, it’s no Rembrandt.”

He was born in Amsterdam and contributed to what would come to be known as the Dutch Golden Age. He is most well known as a painter, but he was also an etcher. The doodle makes use of his famous self-portrait:
