Korvotney Barber, the former Auburn University basketball player, was found dead in Panama City Beach on Sunday afternoon after being reported missing on Saturday. He was 26 years old.

Barber left to go swimming on Saturday, and when he didn’t return that evening he was reported missing. His body was found near Boardwalk Beach Resort Condominiums and Top of the Gulf condos, a victim of apparent drowning, although an autopsy will be performed. Barber was found in an area where swimming had been disallowed because of dangerous conditions, authorities say.

“The Auburn basketball program is deeply saddened to lose one of its great players in Korvotney `Vot’ Barber,” coach Tony Barbee said in a statement. “I was fortunate enough to meet Vot just last week when he stopped by my office to introduce himself to me. What an impressive guy. Our prayers are with his family and loved ones.”

Barber, who was originally from Georgia, averaged 10.9 points and 7.2 rebounds from 2005-09 while playing for Auburn. His former teammates are remembering him today as shock of the news turns to grief, and Auburn released a statement about his untimely death.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the devastatingly tragic and untimely death of Korvotney Barber,” Auburn athletics director Jay Jacobs said. “The Auburn Family remembers Vot as a relentless competitor with the heart of a champion. More importantly, those who knew him best remember him as a caring father who deeply loved his children and his family. Korvotney’s family and friends will remain in our thoughts and prayers during this profoundly sad time.”
