Google announced on Friday that it is shutting down the Google Shopper app, which lets users look up product specs and reviews and comparison shop on their phones while looking at products in stores.

This should make some store owners happy (though it will hardly solve their problems).

The product was launched in 2013, and was even being updated as recently as this past March (at least), as Google added search refinements. But alas, it just no longer fits into Google’s plan.

“We want to focus our efforts on Google Shopping and Google Search, to create a better, more consistent shopping experience across all devices,” says Google Shopping VP, Sameer Samat. “To help us focus on that goal, we’ll be shutting down the standalone Google Shopper app on August 30.”

“Going forward, you can search directly on Google (or use the Google Search app on mobile devices) or visit google.com/shopping in any browser,” Samat adds. “Our best features are there: you can compare prices, shop on the go, find a product in stock locally, check out product photos, read reviews or find product details. You’ll find more than a billion products, from over one hundred thousand sellers — including 10,000 new merchants and marketplaces in the past three months.”

I’m sure Google will be adding plenty more features to Google Shopping as well – perhaps the Helpouts product Google is reportedly testing.
