How much better looking could a couple have been? They didn’t stay together long. So what’s the matter now?
Famed actor, Ethan Hawke, star of such feature films as “Reality Bites,” and “Training Day,” spoke recently about his former marriage to Uma Thurman. In an interview with Elle Magazine, he said he married the movie starlet far too soon.
“Success when you’re young is really overwhelming,” he said.”I had no business taking vows that would last more than two weeks.”
“The world felt out of control and I wanted to stop it from spinning so fast.”
Hawke first came into the “limelight” in 1985. His first role, as an alien obsessed kid in “Explorers,” caught the attention of movie-goers worldwide. He had a string of successful movies for years afterward with such films as “Assault on Precinct 13” and “Lord of War,” a film officially endorsed by Amnesty International.
In 1997, Thurman and Hawke starred in the movie “Gattaca” together. The following year, they married. In that year alone, he featured in three major motion pictures. The couple had two children during their six year marriage, but divorced when rumors surfaced that Hawke had been unfaithful.
“Hawke and Thurman divorced in 2004 amidst allegations that he had cheated with their children’s nanny, Ryan Shawhughes. Hawke claimed that he did not begin a relationship with Shawhughes until after he and Thurman’s marriage was over.”
The actor says although his marriage to Thurman ended, it was not a failure. He says he should have never married when he was so young and immature.
“Through the failure of my first marriage I learned a lot about myself,” he said. “When I was a young man, I had all these ideas about who I wanted to be. But they weren’t totally rooted in the truth.”
The actor subsequently married his former nanny, Ryan Shawhughes and the couple has two children.
