Caroline Wozniacki, the No.6 seed at Saturday’s U.S. Open fell in the 3rd round to 21-year-old Italian Camila Giorgi. The women duked it out, with Giorgi winning the majority of the rounds. (4-6, 6-4 and 6-3.)

Wozniacki, former No. 1, has had a rough season. “Yeah, it wasn’t the best year for me at the majors, but there is a next year,” she said.
Wozniacki lost in the 4th round of the Australian Open to Svetlana Kuznetsova; in the 2nd round of the French Open to Bojana Jovanovski; in the 3rd round of Wimbledon to Petra Cetkovska; and now Saturday’s U.S. Open loss in the 3rd round to Giorgi, ranked 136th.

Wozniacki said of her loss Saturday, “I felt like I needed to push her back, but she took very high-risk shots and things were going in for her. She was going for the lines and she was hitting them when she wanted to. She was just hitting everything. It’s tough to be really aggressive when someone is just going for every shot.”

Giorgi also commented on her game-winning skills: “I think I play better tactically maybe.” When reporters asked the quiet Italian what she felt those tactics were, she said simply, “Just when the ball came, just hit the ball in the corners.”

Caroline Woniacki better hope for a better season next year, and one in which she doesn’t choke; she hasn’t made it past the 4th round in a major event since the 2012 Australian Open.
