Chelsea Clinton, who has been busy in recent years working with the Clinton Foundation, says she and husband Marc Mezvinsky are ready to start a family and hope to have a baby next year.
Clinton told Glamour Magazine recently that in her younger years, she wanted to stray from the things her parents believed in and forge her own path until her grandmother urged her to do something with all she’d been given. When Dorothy Howell Rodham passed away in 2011, Clinton says she felt completely lost.
“It was such a fundamentally unmooring event for me,” she said. “I’ve never been so lost as I was when she passed.”
The loss of such an important figure in her life made her want to re-prioritize her goals, so she had a long talk with her husband about what the immediate future might hold.
“We sat down and said, ‘Here’s what we want to do,’’’ Clinton said. “The first thing on the list was simple: We want, God willing, to start a family. So we decided we were going to make 2014 the Year of the Baby. And please, call my mother and tell her that. She asks us about it every single day.”
A family expansion might wreak havoc on Clinton’s schedule–she just came off a week-long tour of Africa with her father and the Clinton Foundation that brought a powdered formula to several countries which will give them clean drinking water–but she says she’s ready to face a new challenge, if for nothing else than to make her grandmother proud.
“My grandmother was determined that everyone feel a sense of optimism and opportunity,” she said. “Marc and I want to make sure we’re doing that. This period of our lives is not just a tribute to her, it’s inspired by her. And it’s for when we have our own children—I want to help make sure we’ve got a world I want them to live in.”
