Jennifer Lawrence has become America’s darling in the past couple of years; after starring in “The Hunger Games” and “Silver Linings Playbook” and receiving accolades–and awards–for her work, she’s proven that underneath it all she’s a hilarious girl from Kentucky who still gets starstruck by the people she now rubs elbows with. Her penchant for saying whatever is on her mind has charmed the pants off…well, pretty much everyone, and she’s become the girl that all the guys want and all the girls want to be.
But that doesn’t mean she hasn’t run into some detractors.
Lawrence, who was just 16 when she began her acting career, says she’s had to deal with people in the business who put her on blast for her weight, despite the fact that she was young at the time.
“They brought in pictures of me where I was basically naked, and told me to use them as motivation for my diet,” Lawrence said in a recent interview. “It was just that.”
One of the worst parts is that some people are shocked that the incident still bothers her now that she’s an Oscar-winner.
“Yeah. I was a little girl,” she said. “I was hurt. It doesn’t matter what accolades you get…I know it’ll never happen to me again. If anybody even tries to whisper the word ‘diet’, I’m like, ‘You can go f*** yourself.'”
Unfortunately, the very thing that has made so many love Lawrence–the fact that she doesn’t shy away from her own awkwardness–is a spot of contention for others.
“[The other person said] Other people are getting up and owning the stage and you sound like a stuttering idiot. Pull it together,'” Lawrence said of the 2013 Oscars. “And I said, ‘I’m not doing it on purpose, I’m uncomfortable…I make awkward jokes and stutter…That was actually a moment when I really wanted it to be special. That was not the time I wanted to be the down-home Girl. I wanted to be graceful.”
