The Maker community is vast, varied and growing at an extraordinary rate. While it’s been around for years, it only started to grow as quickly as it did thanks to open source and affordable 3D printers. Now a documentary chronicling that movement is doing what 3D printers do on Kickstarter – bring in a lot of money.

Maker – A Documentary On The Maker Movement is a feature length film that looks into “The Maker Movement and its impact on society, culture and economy in the U.S.” As you would expect, it’s been very popular on Kickstarter as it brought in double its original goal of $15,000. With 68 hours to go, it may make even more money as more people are made aware of the film.

It’s shaping up to be a pretty good film anyway. I mean, just look at the list of people they got to speak on the Maker movement:

  • Alec Foege: Author of “The Tinkerers”
  • A. Red Ukachukwu: Production Engineer of Shapeways
  • Barry Katz: Consulting Professor in the Design Division at Stanford University
  • Beth Comstock: CMO of GE
  • Carl Bass: CEO of Autodesk
  • Chris Anderson: Author of “Makers: The New Industrial Revolution”, CEO of 3D Robotics
  • Dale Dougherty: CEO of Maker Media
  • Danae Ringelmann: Founder of Indiegogo
  • David Lang & Eric Stackpole: Co-Founder & Founder of OpenROV
  • Eri Gentry & Raymond McCauley: Executive Director & Principal of BioCurious
  • Eric Migicovsky: CEO of Pebble Watch
  • Hugh Dubberly: President of Dubberly Design
  • Jacob Ferguson: Interaction Designer of Local Motors
  • Jeremt Conrad & Helen Zelman: Founding partners of Lemnos Labs
  • Mark Dwight: Founder/CEO of Rickshaw Bagworks; Founder/Chairman of SFMade.org
  • Mick Ebeling: Founder and CEO of The Ebeling Group (TEG)
  • Jim Newton: Founder of TechShop
  • Navi Radjou: Co-author of “Jugaad Innovation”
  • Nemo Gould: An artist and sculptor
  • Peter Platzer: CEO of Nanosatisifi
  • Scott N. Miller: CEO & Co-Founder of Dragon Innovation
  • Tanya Menendez & Matthew Burnett: Founders of Maker’s Row
  • Tim O’Reilly: Founder of O’Reilly Media
  • If you are even remotely interested in the Maker Movement, the above list should excite you to no end. Not only does it have some of the people directly responsible for kickstarting the movement, but it also has the inventors and entrepreneurs that made it big thanks to said movement.

Here’s the first trailer for the film:

If you want to secure your very own copy of the film, you can get a digital copy right now for $15. If you want a physical DVD, you’ll have to fork over $45. It will be worth it if you value the Maker Movement and all the good that it’s bringing to the world today. After all, this movie is not only for the Makers, but a film to inspire the next generations of Makers around the world.
