Steve Buscemi used his celebrity name for a good cause this week when he signed up to be a bone marrow donor and attended a drive to benefit a 2-year old boy with a life-threatening disease.

Owen Hogan was diagnosed with aplastic anemia earlier this year and his father, a Brooklyn firefighter, wanted to do something to help in the fight for his life. Tim Hogan organized a bone marrow drive on Tuesday with the Friends of Firefighters charity, and when Buscemi heard what was going on in his old neighborhood, he jumped in to help.

The “Boardwalk Empire” actor, who used to be a firefighter before he was called to acting, said he was happy to help and attended the drive from 10 a.m. until noon in order to draw in donors.

“Firefighters are not good at asking for help. You know, they’re used to helping others so that’s what I love about this organization, Friends of Firefighters, because they actively seek out the families that are in need,” he said.

Buscemi is busy with his successful HBO series, but his next project is an unusual film called “The Cobbler“, which also stars Adam Sandler, Dustin Hoffman, Method Man, and “Downton Abbey” star Dan Stevens. The movie tells the story of a man who repairs shoes for a living and finds he can step into the lives of the people the shoes belong to.
