Wang Shun Xue, a Chinese tourist, must have had quite a shock when he was just trying to snap a photo of the beautiful Victoria Falls nestled between Zambia and Zimbabwe, and plunged down into the gorge.

Victoria Falls is described by the Kololo tribe living in the area in the 1800’s as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ – ‘The Smoke that Thunders’. In more modern terms Victoria Falls is known as the greatest curtain of falling water in the world. And one of the most majestic and beautiful.

Luckily, Wang Shun Xue fell only 15 meters – because the gorge at Victoria Falls where tourists are allowed, varies between 15 and 25 meters, but is quite deadly with all of that water falling into a deep ravine. The tourist site Zambia said that water falls more than five hundred million cubic meters of water per minute plummet over the edge, over a width of nearly two kilometers, into a gorge over one hundred meters below.

Wang Shun Xue plunged into the shallow section of the gorge and survived with “only minor injuries,” John Zulu, manager of the National Heritage Conservation Commission in Livingstone, told AFP.

Fortunately, he fell onto a rock, not making it all the way down into the gorge and ended up with a few bruises. “He looked shocked because of the accident,” Zulu said.

After a medical check at a local clinic, the 45-year-old Wang Shun Xue and his three friends flew out of the country.
