Since 2012, Robin Roberts had battled a life-threatening disease called myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). This came five years after she was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer, for which she underwent surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments.
Myelodysplastic syndrome, formerly known as preleukemia, is a disease of the bone marrow. Roberts received a transplant in late 2012 and was able to return to her job as anchor of ABC’s Good Morning America in early 2013.
According to CBS News, Sunday, December 29 marked the anniversary of her 100-day milestone following her transplant. .
In celebration, Roberts posted a picture of she and her dog, KJ, to her Facebook page, grateful for all who have helped her and encouraging others to be grateful for what they have in their lives.
One of those Roberts thanked on the social media outlet was her girlfriend, Amber Laign.
“I am grateful for my entire family, my long time girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together,” she wrote.
Laign is a massage therapist in the San Francisco Bay area. The two have been together for 10 years, although this is the first time Roberts has acknowledged their same-sex relationship publicly. Friends and co-workers have been aware the couple for years.
In May 2014, Roberts plans to write a memoir about being the host of GMA and her battle with MDS. In 2007, Roberts had her first book published: “From the Heart: Seven Rules to Live By.”
“Reading this comforts me and I hope the same for you,” she continued on her Facebook post. “‘If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the present.’ At this moment I am at peace and filled with joy and gratitude.”
