Snapchat announced that it has finally released an update for its Android and iOS apps, which enables users to opt out of linking their phone numbers with their user names.

The news comes roughly a week after a massive security breach, which saw 4.6 million usernames and phone numbers compromised due to a flaw with the Find Friends feature. The functionality of the feature has been improved with the update, the company says.

With the update, new users also must verify their phone numbers before using the Find Friends feature.

The company took a lot of flak in the media for not apologizing for the breach, especially considering they were warned about the vulnerability before it actually happened. Well, they’ve apologized now.

“Our team continues to make improvements to the Snapchat service to prevent future attempts to abuse our API,” the company says. “We are sorry for any problems this issue may have caused you and we really appreciate your patience and support.”

Snapchat previously said it was improving the rate limiting and other restrictions to address future attempts at abuse, and encouraged security experts who find issues with the app to email them at [email protected].
