Judd Apatow and a TV critic had a heated discussion during (and after) the Television Critics Association panel on Thursday after the critic brought up Lena Dunham’s rampant nudity on “Girls”.

The critic, Tim Molloy, broached the subject of the show’s penchant for showing Dunham–and almost always only Dunham–in various states of undress, saying he didn’t understand the purpose of it.

“I don’t get the purpose of all the nudity on the show. By you particularly. I feel like I’m walking into a trap where you say no one complains about the nudity on ‘Game of Thrones,’ but I get why they’re doing it. They’re doing it to be salacious. To titillate people. And your character is often naked at random times for no reason,” he said.

Dunham seemed to take it personally, saying, “Yeah. It’s because it’s a realistic expression of what it’s like to be alive, I think, and I totally get it. If you are not into me, that’s your problem.”

Apatow got into the conversation at that point, asking whether Molloy had a girlfriend.

“Sure,” Molloy said.

“Does she like you?”

“Yeah.”

“Let’s see how she likes you when you quote that with your question and just write the whole question… and tell me how it goes tonight,” Apatow said.

After the panel, Apatow and executive producer Jenni Konner both spoke to Molloy about his question, calling it sexist and offensive. However, Molloy says he really just wanted to understand why there’s so much nudity in scenes that don’t necessarily call for it.

Dunham has come under fire practically since the premiere of “Girls” for her onscreen nudity and has taken a lot of criticism over her body, so it’s understandable if she’s a bit defensive. However, Molloy insists he wasn’t asking the question because he has a problem with Dunham or the way she looks. He says his girlfriend, for the record, was fine with the way he worded it.
