Gabourey Sidibe could care less what anyone has to say! Although cyberspace has a tendency to be quite cruel and pitiless, Sidibe has always been a target for the media’s relentless scrutiny. It never seems to let up for the Precious actress.
However, the Oscar-nominated actress has never been one to retreat during a moment of judgment or discomfort, as she’s always stood her ground.
Now, it appears she’s gone into defense mode yet again. On Sunday, Jan. 12, Sidibe caused a media firestorm with her appearance at the Golden Globe Awards. Fashion and weight critics immediately attacked the plus-size actress, analyzing her appearance from head to toe.
Unfortunately, the negative comments didn’t stop at the red carpet, as thousands took to Twitter to share their disapproval of the American Horror Story actress. Some of the tweets were quite relentless.
So, the 30-year-old New York native took to Twitter to personally address all of the negative comments. She responded with that signature ‘Gabourey Sidibe sarcasm’, laced with an underlying brashness only she could conjure up. Although the tweet was relatively short, it packed the punch needed to silence the opposition.
She tweeted, “To people making mean comments about my GG pics, I mos def cried about it on that private jet on my way to my dream job last night. #JK”
Sidibe’s epic tweet quickly went viral, as she was able to take a potentially stifling situation and manipulate it for positive publicity. A number of media outlets began to tweet back in her defense, lauding her for defending herself.
Once, again it appears Sidibe has proven that she won’t be forced to conform to Hollywood’s standards. However, this isn’t the first time she’s verbally expressed her perspective on the judgment she receives from others.
In a 2009 interview with Oprah, Sidibe discussed her weight and the critical responses. According to On the Red Carpet, She revealed that with age, she grew to understand the meaning of self-worth, and learned to appreciate the person she is.
“One day, I had to sit down with myself and decide that I love myself, no matter what my body looked like and no matter what other people thought of my body,” she said. “I had to love myself. I was like 21ish, 22ish when I decided. I just got tired of feeling bad all the time.”
Once the positive tweets started to flood her Twitter timeline, she chimed in once more with one last vanquishing response.
She tweeted, “Yay! Everyone is so wonderful and supportive of my shade! This might be a problem down the line. Thank you! #notmyjetthough #imnotthatfancy.”
