Kate Gosselin and two of her eight children made an appearance on the “Today” show on Thursday morning, and it did not go well.

The reality stars were there to promote a “Where Are They Now” feature in People Magazine, and when asked a question that stumped her for a moment, Mady was told to “find your words” by Kate, accompanied by a hand clap in her face. The 13-year old answered with a typical 13-year old glare, while her sister sat silent on the other side of their mother.

The question, posed by Savannah Guthrie, was about what Mady might want to say to the world about how her family is doing, and might have stumped anyone whose family had been the subject of a reality show as well as the covers of various tabloids. Kate and ex-husband Jon have had a very public battle after their bitter divorce concerning their kids and what’s best for their well-being, and Jon has spoken to Oprah–among others–about the barely concealed contempt he holds for his former wife.

“At this point, there is no cooperation, there is nothing, There’s two different totally parenting styles, two different totally everythings. Which is a shame, because it affects me, but it really affects my children,” he told Oprah.

The world might indeed be curious about how the family is doing since Jon said in an interview that because Kate has forced the children to grow up in the public eye, they have developmental problems.

“It just became stressful on the kids and stressful on me,” Gosselin told Oprah. “You’re trying to keep your marriage together, and you’re trying to keep your family ties together…Yes, they got to travel the world, and yes, they got these fabulous things, and yes, they have trust funds, and they’re taken care of educationally. Great. But developmentally, they have problems with their peers, and they have problems with talking to other people, and they have problems with wants and needs and manners and morals and what’s right and what’s wrong. I think more so than someone who grows up off TV.”

Kate responded to the accusations with a blog post, saying there was nothing wrong with the kids at all.

“I find it very heart breaking that my children’s father chooses a public forum to discuss his current opinions of the “development” of our children. These opinions are, in reality, value judgements made about our children and they are based on his limited visits (albeit mutually agreed upon) with our children,” she wrote.
