Kanye West Responds to “Bound 2” Critics

Ever since Kanye West released the video for his song “Bound 2,” it seems that just about everyone gave their opinion and weighed in on it.

Some appreciated the video for the wide array of colors that West fused together and the celebrity cameo from his fiance Kim Kardashian, and others hated the video for the wide array of colors West fused together and the celebrity cameo from his fiance Kim Kardashian, which basically means the things that many people love about the rapper, others hate, and that’s why he’s one of the most polarizing artists of our time.

In a discussion with Interview Magazine, West sat down with famed director Steve McQueen and spoke about the backlash the video has received and the controversy surrounding it.

“Yeah. I think all that stuff around it is just that: controversy,” he said. “I think people are afraid of dreams, and that video is one of the closest things to the way that dreams look and feel, or the way joy looks and feels, with the colors.”

In addition, West said that because he chooses to create things outside of the hip-hop norm, he leaves himself open to harsh criticism. “But this video completely didn’t respect any of those [hip-hop] rules whatsoever,” he said. “It’s a dream, and I think the controversy comes from the fact that I don’t think most people are comfortable with their own dreams, so it’s hard for them to be comfortable with other people’s dreams.”

Now whether that’s true or not really depends on each fan’s personal take on West as an artist and the music and videos he releases, but it’s safe to say much of the backlash comes from folks not liking him for the things he says in the media, and it’s hard for most people to separate the artist from his art.

Plus, it seems that West says outrageous things on purpose and he kind of likes the heated reactions, which is why it seems a little silly when people are so passionate about disliking him, because they’re playing right into his hands.

The singer Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols had a similar public persona as West, and he always said a bunch of things that rubbed people the wrong way, which is probably what he wanted, and that’s clearly what West does.

And just like Johnny Rotten, it seems that West believes most of the things he says, but again, it seems his main purpose is to prove that he can say whatever he wants without being censored, and he hopes that people will notice it and have a big time reaction.

As far as “Bound 2,” the 36-year old rapper compared his artistic choices in the video to that of Walt Disney. “I mean, look, it took some time for us to be comfortable with a walking, talking mouse, but that became an icon,” he said. “So this stuff, what I’m doing now, is the beginning of me throwing out what it means to be a rapper, you know, with the gold chain.”
