If you’re a generation Xer like I am, that means you were brought up on hip-hop and grunge music. And that also means groups like the Wu-Tang Clan and Nirvana dominated your cassette players and television sets. But of course, that was back in the day when MTV still played music videos.
Plus, you probably remember exactly where you were when you heard that Kurt Cobain died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and you probably also remember the long period of mourning afterwards from fans of Nirvana, and those who couldn’t get enough of Cobain’s insightful lyrics.
And it’s because of those lyrics that Cobain will now have his own day in his hometown of Aberdeen, Wash., as locals in that town made Feb. 20, Kurt Cobain Day. The event’s organizers said the day won’t only be to celebrate Nirvana and Cobain’s musical achievements, but it’ll also be a way to show local pride.
“Aberdeen residents may justifiably take pride in the role our community played in the life of Kurt Cobain, and the international recognition our community has gained from its connections with Kurt Cobain and his artistic achievements,” they said.
The first celebration will come a little before Nirvana gets inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, so fans of the group should be treated to a lot of band tributes and great music, not to mention having the chance to meet other Nirvana fans.
And folks in Hoquiam, Wash. will also honor Cobain, but on April 10, as he and band member Krist Novoselic lived there for a period. The town’s mayor, Jack Durnaey, said it would be shameful if the local community didn’t honor the legendary group or its front man.
“I think that it’s good Kurt Cobain lived in Hoquiam for a little while,” said Durnaey. “He and Krist Novoselic are part of our community, and I think it’s good to honor our sons and their great accomplishments.”
