You can really tell a person is pretty stylish if he or she changes clothes four times for one event, which is exactly what Katy Perry did at this year’s Grammy Awards.

And if you’ve ever wondered what really goes on behind the scenes of choosing four outfits, Perry’s style-team has revealed some of their carefully guarded secrets.

For the entire evening, the team went with a horror theme, and used a lot of dark colors to pull it off. But for the red carpet, they wanted to do something a little different. “We love a theme, so for this year’s Grammy performance it was a dark look, very haunting and sexy,” said Johnny Wujek, one of Perry’s stylists.

“For the carpet we wanted to lighten things up, so our inspiration was a white witch, very angelic, light and whimsical. We love Valentino and this dress had all of the right pieces for the Grammys, and most importantly made a statement.”

But for Perry’s performance, her team wanted an outfit that would perfectly match the concept of the song she was singing “Dark Horse,” so they went with dark purples and a variety of spooky colors. “We wanted to go with a powerfully haunting performance, where Katy was the queen of the coven,” said Wujek. “I designed the dress based on the treatment–a rich deep purple cape with a silhouette of a horse on the back.”

And the long skirt, along with the bra-styled top, was created to highlight not only the song’s lyrics and feel, but to add to the overall performance as well. Especially the illuminated cross that Perry wore on the front of her outfit.

“The cross was lit by LED ropes, and I was waiting on the side-lines ready to make them glow,” explained Wujek, who’s been styling Perry for several years.

And what would a cool looking outfit be if one’s nails weren’t right, so Perry had her team go with a simple style that would offset the intricate design of her attire.

“Katy wanted something really simple and chic to go with her red carpet dress and her performance look,” said Kimmie Keys, Perry’s manicurist. “We chose a light pink shade called Everbloom from the CoverGirl Outlast Nail Gloss collection. It offered just a subtle hint of color to keep the focus on her gown and flawless face.”
