An SUV that was carrying six women crashed into a pickup truck early Friday, near Grand Rapids, Michigan. Four of the women in the SUV were killed , the other two were injured, as were the three men in the truck. The driver of the SUV lost control of the vehicle and spun into the path of the truck.

Authorities are still trying to determine what caused the driver of the SUV to lose control of the vehicle, but believe that icy road conditions may have been the cause.

“There are some slippery spots,” Sheriff Dean Roesler said Friday. “The scene of the crash is icy but there’s also been a lot of traffic that’s been through that as well that may have created some of it.”

The four women who were killed in the accident were Erika Ceja, 35; Angelica Magana-Ceja, 45; Teresa Alvarez, 35; and Jessica Magana, 23. The women were on their way to work when the accident occurred.

An off-duty Grand Rapids police officer and a nurse were nearby when the accident happened and were able to provide medical attention until emergency responders arrived. Their actions may have helped save the lives of those who were injured in the accident.

Investigators are working to determine the exact cause of the accident and police officials are warning drivers to watch for snow and ice on the roads while traveling.

Several other accidents occurred in Michigan the same day, due to bad road conditions. A different SUV wrecked into a home, injuring the driver and a couple was killed after an accident that happened on a highway near Grand Rapids.
