Demi Lovato hasn’t made a secret of her struggles with drugs and depression, so it didn’t exactly come as a surprise to many when her ex, Joe Jonas, said in an interview that the first time he smoked pot was with her and Miley Cyrus. Still, Jonas was worried that the revelation might hurt Lovato, and spoke with her before the interview aired to let her know what he’d said.

“The first time I smoked weed was with Demi and Miley,” Jonas said. “I must have been 17 or 18. They kept saying, ‘Try it! Try it!’ so I gave it a shot, and it was all right. I don’t even smoke weed that often anymore.”

Lovato says she doesn’t even remember the time Jonas is referencing but admits that it probably did happen.

“He had warned me a couple days before, and said, ‘Hey heads up, I did an interview and I talked about smoking pot with you and Miley,” Lovato later said in an interview with E! News. “I was like, ‘We smoked pot together?!’ I don’t even remember clearly… but I’m pretty sure it happened.”

Jonas got a little more in-depth about his relationship with the former Disney Channel star, which may have been why he was nervous to tell her about the interview.

“I felt like I was living a lie…I wasn’t happy but felt like I had to stay in it for her, because she needed help,” he said. “Things kept building up, and Demi ended up punching a girl in the face on a plane, because she thought the girl was blaming her for something. Everybody gasped, and the girl just started bleeding. That’s when her team and her family told her, ‘You need to go into rehab.'”

Lovato says there are no hard feelings about what he said, but she does intend to talk to him face-to-face.

“I was like, ‘Relax, we’re good. Just don’t be so stupid next time,'” she said. “[I said], ‘I want to sit and talk to you in person, but I love you. It’s all good. We’re always going to be friends.'”

Lovato has seen more than one relationship become strained in recent years due to her issues with substance abuse; Selena Gomez spoke recently about their friendship and how they had to repair it after Lovato sought help.

“Demi’s very, very strong. She’s the only person that I would tell the deepest, darkest secrets to. The only person. I’ve known her since we were 7, and we did fall apart for a while,” Gomez said. “She was going through things and I was so young and it was confusing. I processed it saying, ‘OK, I don’t understand what she’s going through so I’m just going to do this.’ I don’t think it was fair, and I’m so happy that I have her back in my life now.”
