Kansas Bomb Plot- What The Judge Won’t Share?

A federal judge has ruled that information and details about a bomb plot will not be released to the public. Terry Loewen, a 58-year-old avionics technician had planned to bomb Wichita’s Mid-Continent Airport on Dec. 13, but was luckily arrested in a sting operation before he could follow through with his plans.

Prosecutors claim that Loewen had planned to attack the airport during the holiday season because it was peak travel time and he would be able to cause the most harm to the largest number of people. Loewen has pleaded not guilty to charges of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction, attempting to use a bomb and supporting Al-Qaida.

Prosecutors asked the judge to keep the details of the case a secret because they are afraid the media attention would disclose evidence and expose investigative methods. The were also concerned that the details would reveal the real or fake identities of the undercover agents that helped bring Loewen down.

The judge’s order will only allow Loewen to have access to certain case materials while in the presence of his attorney. The order also states that neither defense or prosecuting attorneys can offer information or details of the case to the media.

Defense attorneys did not feel that the judge needed to pass such an order and had said that they would not be divulging the FBI agents’ identities. They accused the government of trying to “micromanage” the defense and called the order intrusive.

Do you think it was right for the judge to pass the order or is the judge doing exactly what the defense has accused him of doing?
