Toyota is recalling nearly 1.9 million Prius cars to fix a software malfunction that in the worst case scenario, could cause the hybrid vehicles to lose power and shut down mid-drive.

Around 700,000 of the cars are being recalled in North America, and even more in Japan.

“Toyota will update the motor/generator control ECU and hybrid control ECU software on certain Model Year 2010-2014 Prius vehicles,” said the company in a press release.

“The software’s current settings could result in higher thermal stress in certain transistors, potentially causing them to become damaged. If this happens, various warning lights will illuminate and the vehicle can enter a failsafe mode. In rare circumstances, the hybrid system might shut down while the vehicle is being driven, resulting in the loss of power and the vehicle coming to a stop.”

Toyota says that there have been no reports of any issues arising from this glitch.

The Prius recently topped multiple “best-value” lists, some for the second straight year. Consumer Reports, for instance, cited the Prius’ fuel economy, performance, and reliability.

In 2012, Toyota issues a couple of high-profile recalls – one of which covered 7.4 million vehicles. Late last year, Toyota issued a recall on nearly a million vehicles due to a possible airbag malfunction. Toyota issued double-digit voluntary recalls in 2013.

Though the recall of the Prius is the largest part of Toyota’s announcement, the world’s top auto company also recalled approximately 260,000 RAV4s, Tacomas, and Lexus RX 350s for two separate issues.
