Let’s say you’re walking around San Francisco, donning a pair of Google Glass, when some guy comes up to you and asks you to stop filming him, lest he “beat the shit out of you”–or something like that. Let’s say you offer the fact that it’s your right to wear whatever you want in public and you’re not even recording anyway as a retort.
Now, let’s say that this guy beats the shit out of you. Now you need a drink.
Good news, as one San Francisco area bar will give you one for free, just for snapping a picture with your Google Glass and doing a little bit of social media promotion.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the bar inside of Stanford Court, a “modern classic hotel” in the Nob Hill area, is offering a free drink to anyone wearing Google Glass.
“The complimentary drink is geared toward the local tech crowd who own a pair, and might feel like an outcast or nuisance due to the recent string of negative press,” said a hotel spokesperson in an e-mail to the Chronicle. “[We] want them to feel at home.”
The “recent string of negative press” that the hotel refers to involves a San Francisco woman’s claim that she was the victim of the first Google Glass-hater assault in the country when a group of people verbally and physically attacked her in an area bar. Her story created a media firestorm, followed by some pretty intense backlash when she started acting like a bit of a media hustler.
That woman’s story is simply the most public of a series of backlashes against Google’s wearable tech, as many (especially in the tech-centric city of San Francisco) are wary of a world where everyone is wearing a camera on their face.
Oh, and there’s also the problem of early adopters being a bunch of assholes–on occasion, of course. Even Google knows that Google Glass assholes (Glassholes) are a bit of an issue, and made a point to tell users that being a Glasshole will ruin everything for everyone.
“Don’t be creepy or rude, aka a Glasshole,” says Google.
“Respect others and if they have questions about Glass don’t get snappy. Be polite and explain what Glass does and remember, a quick demo can go a long way. In places where cell phone cameras aren’t allowed, the same rules will apply to Glass. If you’re asked to turn your phone off, turn Glass off as well. Breaking the rules or being rude will not get businesses excited about Glass and will ruin it for other Explorers.”
But if you find yourself alone, miserable, tossed aside by the very city that should love you the most–just know that there’s one place where you can get a free drink. Give us your tired, your poor relatively wealthy, your Goggled masses…
